Mission Trip FAQ
Mission Trip FAQ’s
Why should I go on a short-term mission trip?
One of the most common reasons people decide to go on a short-term mission trip is to obey the Great Commission God gives us in Matthew 28:19, “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit…”. Participation also allows you to walk with God’s Global servants, to step out in faith, take a journey of personal growth, and encourage others.
What should I expect while on a trip?
First, you will be out of comfort zone, but that’s a good thing! God will be able to use you, and you will return changed, different than when you left. On these trips plans tend to change, so the team learns quickly to just roll with it!
How can I become a member of a mission team?
There is an application that needs to be completed, as well as an authorization for a background check to be conducted. The team leaders will review all the information submitted, and prayerfully select the team God has in mind for this trip. If you aren’t selected for any particular trip, you may be encouraged to re-apply for another.
How old do I need to be to participate?
Most of our trips are suitable for kids age 16 and up. If a parental guardian is also going on the trip, kids age 12 and up may be considered.
Do I need a passport?
All trips outside of continental U.S. require a passport.
What does the team do on a trip?
This greatly depends on the purpose of the trip. Our teams going to Haiti not only minister to the Haitians, but they also help to build houses. Some of our teams have traveled to Europe to conduct a kids program for global workers so the workers can participate in their own conference without disruption.
Do I have to be a member of Heartland Church to participate?
No, you do not need to be a member, or even a regular attender of Heartland Church, although Heartland attenders will be given preference in selection of teams. You will, however, have to go through an application process to ensure you are well suited for the trip.
How long is a mission trip?
Our trips usually range anywhere from 7 to 13 days long.
How much does a trip cost?
This will vary widely based on whether the team is wrapping in some touring adjacent to the mission portion of the trip, as well as the location to which they are traveling. Usually our trips are minimally $1,500, but could go as high as $2,500.
How is the trip paid for?
Heartland Church allows each team to do its fair share of fundraising to help those called to missions trip be able to afford it. You may also send letters asking for support from people outside of Heartland Church (family, friends, etc.) to help you meet the financial obligation. We expect that each individual will make some personal contribution to their expense as well.
If people contribute to my trip, is their contribution tax deductible?
Yes. Any contributions to mission trips for people other than one’s children, are tax deductible.
How many people go on a trip?
Our teams normally consist of anywhere between 8 and 20 people.
What about immunizations?
Dependent on where you are going, there may be immunizations recommended by the Center for Disease Control. Here’s their website to see the current recommendations.
